The Danger of walking a dog with a collar instead of a harness or lead
I did not know this until I rushed my dog to the vet as my dog’s eye became blooding for no apparent reason. This is something that every dog owner should know.
I was playing with my dog and all of a sudden her eye was full of blood, I quickly rushed her to the vet. After he asked me many questions one of which was had I been walking her and yanked on her collar. I stated that no we had just been playing I didn’t even have her collar on. He told me that collars that are yanked hard enough can cause this type of damage and can make the dog loose its eye sight. But normally will show damage to both eyes not just one, as the collar constricts the carotid arteries, so he started looking for another reason that this could have happened. So if you have a dog that lunges when you walk them you should always use a harness, or a lead.
It turned out what had happened was she was attacked by a cat, but because of her thick fur we could not see the hematoma the Vet actually had to shave her neck down to see the damage, and sure enough she had four small puncture wounds, and while they were not infected the cat got her in just the right place to cause the problem. http://coolpetproducts.weebly.com/cool-dog-toys.html
However this brought the problem of collars to my attention. When I got Willow she was so head strong and a lunger, that I could not take her for a walk using a collar or even a harness, I had to get her a lead, a lead is like a horse lead. It goes around the mussel of the dog and stops them from pulling. Now she really doesn’t like it, and has since gotten better about walking on the harness but the first couple of years I had to use the lead to take her for any walk. I had been told to get a spiked collar, but once I went looking for a solution I was explained to that a dog that has pitt in their DNA is not a candidate for any type of constrictive collars, as pain will not stop them. http://coolpetproducts.weebly.com/news.html
While pitt mixes are great dogs they do have an extremely high tolerance for pain, and will not let it stop them from their objective. This does make them seem more dangerous then other breeds. But all of the pitt mixes that I have been around are really big lovers, and just want you to love them.
